【Open for Enrollment】Course Announcement (Semester 115-1): New Course Offered by the College of Engineering — "Engineering Technology and Social Practice" (Course Code: EG5014)

To fulfill the University Social Responsibility (USR) mission and respond to local needs in Fuxing District, Taoyuan City, the College of Engineering is offering a new course this semester, “Engineering Technology and Social Practice.”

The course aims to cultivate students’ ability to apply engineering knowledge and expertise to address local issues, extending learning from the classroom to real-world community settings. Through interaction and collaboration with local communities, students will develop interdisciplinary competencies, a sense of social responsibility, and the capacity to contribute to sustainable development through engineering practice.

I. Course Features

Building on the University’s years of engagement in Fuxing District in the areas of smart disaster prevention, energy transition, and environmental monitoring, this course guides students to identify real-world challenges, understand local needs, and develop practical solutions.

The course includes:

Three Key Themes: Smart Disaster Prevention, Energy and Carbon Reduction, and Sustainable Environment
Diverse Learning Approaches: Classroom instruction, field visits in Fuxing District, and hands-on practice

Time & Venue: Wednesdays, 13:10–16:00 | E6-A102
Enrollment Capacity: 50 students (Elective)
Eligible Students: Undergraduate students (Years 1–4), master’s students, and doctoral students
Assessment: This course emphasizes hands-on practice and active participation. There will be no traditional written examinations.

III. Course Schedule

1	Course Introduction / Overview	1.Introduction to course content and assessment methods. 2. Students will work in groups (or individually) and select one project area: Smart Disaster Prevention, Energy and Carbon Reduction, or Sustainable Environment.
2	Theme III: Sustainable Environment	Introduction to water quality monitoring, microplastic analysis, water resource protection, and aquaponics.
3	Theme III: Sustainable Environment	1. Introduction to air quality monitoring and waste resource recovery. 2. Case studies on water and air quality monitoring and environmental education initiatives in Fuxing District.
4	Theme III: Sustainable Environment	Participation in the 2026 Ministry of Education University Social Responsibility (USR) SIG Exchange Event: “Sustainable Water Resource Action: Interdisciplinary Practice and USR Exchange.”
5	Theme III: Sustainable Environment	Preliminary project discussions and hands-on practice.
6	Theme I: Smart Disaster Prevention	Guest lecture by experts from the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), focusing on disaster prevention and related issues.
7	Theme II: Energy and Carbon Reduction	Introduction to green energy technologies and current energy trends.
8	Theme II: Energy and Carbon Reduction	Concepts of energy transition and net-zero emissions.
9	Theme II: Energy and Carbon Reduction	Case studies on microgrid systems and energy education initiatives implemented in Fuxing District.
10	Group Discussions by Theme	Preliminary project discussions and hands-on practice.
11	Theme II: Energy and Carbon Reduction	Preliminary project discussions and hands-on practice.
12	Theme I: Smart Disaster Prevention	The class sessions originally scheduled for November 25 and December 23 will be combined and rescheduled as a one-day field visit and project-based practical activity in Fuxing District.
13	Theme I: Smart Disaster Prevention	1. Understanding disaster risks and community-based disaster prevention strategies under climate change. 2. Introduction to climate change, geological hazards, debris-flow and landslide risks, and the vulnerability of mountainous areas.
14	Theme I: Smart Disaster Prevention	1. Introduction to community-based disaster preparedness and resilient communities. 2. Exploring community disaster prevention and the application of disaster information technologies, such as GPS and GNSS monitoring. 3. Introduction to the geographical and environmental characteristics of Fuxing District. 4. Case studies on resilient communities and community-based disaster preparedness initiatives in Fuxing District.
15	Theme II: Energy and Carbon Reduction	Guest lecture on energy-related topics by Hui-Ping Chen, Founder and Founding Chairperson of the Taiwan Green Energy for Charity Association.
16	Theme I: Smart Disaster Prevention	The class sessions originally scheduled for November 25 and December 23 will be combined and rescheduled as a one-day field visit and project-based practical activity in Fuxing District.
