The 2021 International Capstone Design Contest, organized by Pukyong National University (South Korea), marked its first edition with 30 international teams competing, and 10 teams receiving awards. Among them, two NCU Civil Engineering teams secured prestigious prizes:
🏆 First Prize – $1,000 USD
🏅 Encouragement Prize – $500 USD
The First Prize-winning team consisted of six senior-year students:
👨🏫 Advisor: Prof. Hsieh-Hsiang Hsu, Director of NCU’s International Office
👨🎓 Teaching Assistant: Dr. Fei Ai, Ph.D. student in the Steel Structure Laboratory
🔹 The team originally formed for the NCU Civil Engineering Capstone Course Steel Bridge Competition. They worked through bridge design conceptualization, manual analysis, software simulations, fabrication (cutting, drilling, welding), and testing.
🔹 Due to COVID-19 restrictions, they were unable to attend the Asian Student Steel Bridge Competition, so they pivoted to the International Capstone Design Contest, where they showcased their exceptional skills and secured victory.
The Encouragement Prize-winning team, "Team AFI", consisted of three international students from the Geotechnical Engineering division:
🔹 Project Title: Geotechnical Centrifuge Modeling of C-RHA Pile for Slope Stabilization
🔹 Their project integrated fundamental soil mechanics, foundation engineering, slope stability analysis, and experimental geotechnical modeling to study RHA micropiles as an innovative slope stabilization solution.
🔹 Using centrifuge model testing, they demonstrated the effectiveness of RHA micropiles, leading to valuable research contributions and international recognition.
🌟 NCU Civil Engineering continues to shine on the global stage! These outstanding achievements highlight our students' technical excellence, innovation, and adaptability in tackling real-world engineering challenges.
💡 Congratulations to both teams for their hard-earned success! 🎊🚀
